June 17, 2023 @ 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
FreeThe Afrimerican Culture Initiative Inc. has been working hard with many other wonderful Hyde Park stakeholders to create a wonderful family experience marking the ongoing struggle freedom, equity & justice.
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of indigenous African Americans from slavery in the United States. It dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States. This momentous step acknowledges the significance of Juneteenth as a pivotal moment in American history and highlights the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice.
